Graduate Spotlight: Megan Higgo

Date: April 2, 2024

We recently caught up with Megan Higgo to find what fueled her pursuit of this degree, her invaluable advice for prospective students, and her transformative journey over the past two years.

Could you kindly provide us with a brief overview of your experience over the past two years while pursuing your MEM degree?

“Embarking on the MEM degree at Stellenbosch University has been an incredibly enriching journey. Balancing full-time work with my studies took a lot of discipline, but despite the challenges, the experience proved to be exceptionally rewarding. I had the privilege of learning from world-class lecturers who brought a wealth of knowledge, passion, and practical insights into each topic. They did an excellent job at bridging the gap between academic theories and their application in the professional world. This broadened my approach to problem-solving and enhanced my perspective in many ways.”

What inspired you to pursue this degree?

“My inspiration for pursuing the MEM degree stemmed from a desire to deepen my understanding of various engineering management topics, with a specific focus on digital innovation, technology, and the human aspects of engineering. Having gained practical work experience across a variety of projects, I recognised the potential to enhance my skills and make a more significant impact in the work I was doing. The prospect of learning from top-tier academics and professionals, and applying this knowledge to drive positive change, was ultimately what made me decide to go for it.”

What advice would you give to prospective students considering studying toward a structured masters degree in Engineering Management?

“To prospective students considering this programme, my advice would be to embrace the challenge fully. Prepare for a demanding but rewarding journey that will equip you with the skills to lead and innovate. Be willing to engage deeply with the material and apply it in real-world contexts. Also, take advantage of the opportunity to learn from your peers and lecturers, whose experiences and insights can enrich your own understanding and approach to engineering management.”

Congratulations Megan Higgo on your Cum Laude achievement and being one of the inaugural graduates of the structured MEM programme! Well done!
