Graduate Spotlight: Modesty Lewis

Date: April 8, 2024

Modesty Lewis shares the wisdom she’s gained and her counsel for prospective students contemplating a Master’s degree in Engineering Management and she describes the hybrid online learning environment and the support she received over the past two years below.

In what ways do you feel this programme has helped you grow personally and professionally?

“This MEM degree offers a transformative experience by fostering personal and professional growth through various avenues. It emphasises leadership development, honing skills in team and resource management, while also enhancing problem-solving abilities through real-world scenarios and projects. Furthermore, it encourages networking among diverse peers through group projects. By covering a wide range of topics, from engineering to management, the degree promotes a broader perspective and adaptability mindset, especially when it comes to soft-skill development.

I believe that completing this MEM degree will open doors to career advancement, equipping graduates with specialised knowledge and skills that make them competitive in the job market. Additionally, the programme cultivates personal qualities like time management and resilience, contributing to our overall confidence and growth.”

What advice would you give to prospective students considering studying toward a structured Master’s Degree in Engineering Management?

“This degree has a good balance between the workload, assignments, and lectures. It is also a very good learning experience and therefore you need to enjoy the journey to optimise what you get out of it. However, you will not be able to enjoy it if you don’t make a place for the MEM in your schedule. It is a Master’s degree and should be treated as such. Don’t expect it to be a walk in the park. Plan your week, adjust your schedule as you see fit, and don’t forget to eat healthy and exercise (and remember to socialise). Most importantly, do your part when it comes to group work. Don’t be a burden to others by doing nothing or the bare minimum. Being actively involved in group projects will increase your learning and your group members will respect you for that.”

How would you describe the hybrid learning environment and the support you’ve received over the last two years?

“The online hybrid delivery mode fits well into a busy schedule. I was able to plan most weeks very well based on the MEM schedule provided. Being a mother and a manager while studying is not an easy task. I dropped the ball a few times but was able to catch up because the lectures were recorded and I could conveniently go back to it at a more convenient time.

The contact sessions provided a good summary of the various modules.  It also created the opportunity to ask questions, get to know the lecturers, and hear the voices of our fellow classmates. This degree is off to a good start. It can only get better from this point forward.

The support I got throughout the degree played a huge role in my success.  The faculty as a whole was very supportive and the feedback on questions was reasonable.  I made a lot of new friends which is important because you need people to talk to that understand what you are going through.”

Congratulations Modesty Lewis! We are very proud of your Cum Laude achievement! Best wishes!
